Sunday 28th March saw 26 Kendoka from around the country gather for a 3 hour seminar lead by Darren Cutting and assisted by Gary O'donnell, Trevor Chapman and Graeme Dockwray. The seminar started with Gary O'donnell leading an hours training in the recently introduced Kihon-no-kata, emphasising the importance of correct distance and timing essential in keeping the kata flowing smoothly. The hour passed with the kata being well explained and plenty of time to practice both moto-dachi and kakari-te roles of each kata.
After this Darren Cutting then took over for two hours of shinai kendo practice. Starting with kirikaeshi, he emphasised the importance of correct spirit throughout the practice, to give 100% for each and every action rather than regarding each action as part of a drill we are all too familiar with and so do not commit ourselves to.
Moving on through a series of exercises that at the time felt confusing enough to stop you thinking straight so you had to relax, the continued emphasis on zanshin and correct attitude made the whole experience feel less rushed and more focused than my usual flailing into action. The session ended with enough time for jigeiko and the perfect opportunity to put into practice what had been discussed.
I would like to thank the sensei present for their excellent teaching and look forward in the hope that there will be many more opportunities like this to train.
